I am the Project Lead of Bruyère Continuing Care’s  INSPIRED COPD initiative, which will improve the care of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) – a non-communicable, chronic disease – in complex continuing care. Our initiative includes the co-implementation of the Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation to proactively screen patients at risk of developing COPD, while ensuring that they have access to the resources and services they need to stop smoking.

This project included conducting a comprehensive needs assessment in 2013, and involves the design and development of hospital-based policies and procedures; the acquisition of capital equipment; liaising with stakeholders across the health system; recruiting and training clinical staff; securing funding; and both quantitative and qualitative measurement and evaluation. I hope to scale this program up nationally and internationally, and am particularly interested in the management of non-communicable respiratory diseases in low- and middle-income countries.

I am also the current editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Respiratory Therapy (CJRT), a peer-reviewed, open-access journal focusing on respiratory care.
