Along with a Canadian colleague, I co-led the design and conduct of a needs assessment of health human resources for maternal, newborn and child health in Afghanistan in order to guide programming for the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada.

Our assessment utilized a health systems approach to understand gaps and capacities in Afghanistan across each of the WHO health system building blocks. Our analysis and report made strategic recommendations to the Canadian government on how best to scale-up the quality and sustainability of Afghanistan’s health human resources system drawing on existing, successful initiatives and identifying gaps that need to be filled to ensure the availability of high quality maternal and newborn health services in the country.
